A Long Distance From Somewhere Art Print - By Avery Gibbes
It's not uncommon at certain points throughout life to feel lost or lack direction for a period of time. It’s especially common in times following a significant change within one’s life. While going through a time like this, it can feel overwhelming—as it will never end—and is often very lonely.
This painting pictures a human alone and lost in an environment made up of these large natural forms that I find can function as both strange large plants and as landforms within the picture, depending on how you want to look at them. This environment continues on farther than the eye can see. With no clear right direction for this person to take, the best they can do is just commit to moving forward and hope it will eventually lead them to some place better.
“Paintings of Another Universe” is a series of paintings that explore the “what ifs” of an imaginary situation where a small number of humans suddenly exist within a fictional alien world. This series is about the feeling of being an outsider after entering an unfamiliar world, and about gradually finding one’s place within it. This narrative sits at the core of the series, and each painting serves to further explore this narrative and to further build the world within which it is taking place.
More About the Artist:
Avery Gibbes is an artist based in Oshawa, Ontario and a graduate of OCAD University. Working primarily in painting, his current practice revolves around the continual creation and exploration of an imaginary alien world. At the centre of his work are imagined narratives taking place in made-up environments, and these are constructed through sketches that experiment with designs and explore scenarios. Each painting builds off of the previous one, giving viewers a deeper look into what exists within the world that he is showcasing.
